The Relationship between NEA and SAA Grantees

The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), state and jurisdictional arts agencies (SAAs), and regional arts organizations (RAOs) award grants directly to organizations and individuals advancing the arts across the nation. The NEA and SAAs/RAOs have a considerable number of shared award recipients. In FY 2007:

• 1,114 grantees received funding from both the NEA and SAAs/RAOs. 59% of NEA grantees received grants from their SAA/RAO, while 6% of SAA/RAO grantees received grants from the NEA.
• These shared grantees are located in 412 communities across the country in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and the Virgin Islands.
• These shared grantees received 3,707 awards, with $59 million coming from SAAs/RAOs and $30 million from the NEA.
• Most shared grantees (83%) were arts organizations. Other shared grantees include educational institutions, community organizations and individual artists.
• Slightly less than half of these shared grantees were in the performing arts (dance, music, opera or theatre).

Data Sources: SAA/RAO grant-making data is from FY2007 Final Descriptive Reports as provided annually to the NEA and NASAA by state, jurisdictional and regional arts organizations. NEA grant-making data is provided by the NEA. For comparative purposes, NEA grant-making data excludes awards to states, jurisdictions and regions.
