The Smithsonian's American Art Museum created a Web companion for its George Catlin exhibit, Campfire Stories with George Catlin: An Encounter of Two Cultures. The site is a 2003 MUSE gold medal award winner and the judges commended the site for its "wealth of information in a range of formats . . . history, art history, biography, natural history and more . . . bringing multiple perspectives to bear on Catlin's work and its place in Native American history." Writer Peter Mathiessen serves as guide, introducing the four main sections of the site: Ancestral Lands, Catlin's Quest, Chiefs and Leaders, and the Western Landscape. Joining him as commentators are contemporary American Indian representatives, historians, scientists and curators who share their knowledge on subjects ranging from the ecology of the prairie to Native American cultural traditions. Throughout their remarks, Catlin's images provide a visual dimension, and excerpts from his notebooks further enhance the sense of place and time in contrast to these contemporary voices.
