FOLKLIFE IN LOUISIANA

Folklife in Louisiana introduces the visitor to Louisiana's array of cultural traditions. Like the Mississippi Arts Commission's Crossroads of the Heart, this site uses the Web to broaden people's perspective on the meaning of art and how it affects our everyday lives. It takes information and cultural objects out of the 'art box' and makes them accessible at the click of a mouse. For example, the site moves the Creole State Exhibit collection out of the state capitol building and puts it on the desktop, creating a virtual tour for the visitor complete with background information.

In addition, the site includes a section for teachers -- Louisiana Voices: An Educator's Guide to Exploring Our Communities and Traditions. This is a pioneering set of interdisciplinary study units integrating folklife into existing classroom curricula, using the latest technology. The guide also helps teachers meet the new Louisiana Content Standards with a special focus on English language arts and social studies. The lessons target 4th and 8th grades, but they can be adapted to any grade level.
