TOOLS

Community Toolbox

The National Park Service's Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance program has created a comprehensive toolbox for anyone who works with communities to preserve, develop and identify the cultural, natural and heritage resources that make them special places. Here you will find how-to pieces on decision making, events, facilitation, organization, outreach and communication, among other topics.

Arizona's Cultural Heritage Tourism -- Practical Applications

The Arizona Humanities Council has published a handbook for communities throughout the state about how to develop a cultural heritage tourism project or initiative. This workbook identifies issues to consider and offers step-by-step examples, many of them drawn from case studies. The authors believe cultural heritage tourism may not be appropriate for every community or institution, so many of the exercises here are designed to help communities make their own decision. Utah's Heritage Tourism Toolkit

The Utah State Historical Society produced this online publication with the U.S, Forest Service, the Colorado Historical Society and the University of Colorado, Denver. The toolkit focuses on helping communities expand, preserve and manage their heritage resources. It includes a package of practical tools and resources.

Vermont's Cultural Heritage Tourism Toolkit

The toolkit describes not only what cultural heritage tourism products look like, but also how they can be achieved efficiently, effectively and responsibly. Based on this work, Maine residents are able to find information on just about any arts or cultural activity through a series of cultural directories being published around the state. The 27 communities that have so far participated in this program and their cultural assets are also part of an online database housed on the Maine Cultural Network.
