THE LEWIS & CLARK EXPEDITION

The Lewis & Clark Expedition is the latest cultural travel itinerary developed by the National Register of Historic Places. The Lewis and Clark journals comprise more than a million words. The site pays homage to that enormous literary effort by opening with a quill pen scratching out the title page followed by an animated journey up the Missouri River and across the mountains to the Pacific. Once inside the site, visitors are able to take a virtual journey marked by key sites along the route. Each stop has a brief overview and excerpts from the explorers' journals. In addition to the historic sites, there are also extensive essays on science, Native Americans and the trail today, among other topics. The site brings together an impressive array of historic and cultural resources to develop a dynamic cultural tourism Web experience.
