STATE ARTS SPENDING EXHIBITS MODEST GAINS
Legislative appropriations to state arts agencies showed modest gains in fiscal year 2006, according to NASAA's Legislative Appropriations Annual Survey, Fiscal Year 2006. Appropriations to state arts agencies currently stand at $327.5 million, or about $1.09 per capita. Following three years of sharp declines, fiscal year 2006 was the second year of small gains for the arts. Among the nation's 56 state and jurisdictional arts agencies, 37 reported growth in their appropriations this year (in comparison to 29 last year). Seven state arts agencies reported flat funding in 2006, and 12 reported declines. Reflecting continued uncertainty in state finances, most of the arts funding gains reported in 2006 were modest in magnitude.
